Engines

The engine is the original Perkins 4-108 with Borg-Warner hydraulic in line gearbox.

The engine was removed from the boat in about 2006, and was rebuilt by the previous owner. As far as I am aware, this was a total rebuild with all new bearings, rings, and liners. A new starter motor was fitted.

The gearbox was replaced with an exchange unit in 2007 as the original was rather noisy. The engine was completely rewired in 2012 , with full schematics available. Oil pressure switch and over temperature sensor were replaced in 2012.

The engine ventilation blower was replaced in 2015. In 2016 this was fitted with a timer to cut it off 10 minutes after the engine is stopped.

The flexible bellows in the exhaust system was replaced in 2016.

A complete engine log has been kept over 20 years.

Rigging

The original Nautor mast and boom are fitted.

The mast was rewired with new LED tricolour and anchor light, motoring and spotlight in about 2008. All standing rigging was renewed 2012. ( The original rigging wires with Norseman terminals are included as spares). A Harken  mainsail track system was fitted by the previous owner with recirculating ball cars.

The boom was converted to slab reefing in 2008, with a sheave box fitted to the aft end with sheaves for 2 reefs. An additional sheave is fitted to the side of the boom for the third reef.

A three section rope jammer was fitted under the boom to secure the reefing lines. A new gooseneck plate was fitted to the mast for the fixed gooseneck. ( The original design had the gooseneck running on a track on the mast for the boom downhaul.) A three sheave block leads the reefing lines to a deck mounted snatch block, and then to the reefing winch.

The genoa roller reefing system was replaced new in 2007 with a Facnor system. The reefing drum was replaced with the latest Facnor drum in 2013, as the original drum had seized bearings.

The original rig for the Swan 41 had a large 150% genoa. In order to improve performance in strong winds, the current owner designed a furling jib system which can be used when the genoa is furled. This is a portable stay with continuous line roller reefing which is normally stowed by the mast. When stowed , the genoa can be tacked normally. In order to used the jib, the stay is transferred to the fixing on the deck track just aft of the fixed forestay. It is tightened using a screw backstay type tensioner. The high cut jib can then be hoisted into the foil, and furled/reefed using the continuous line furler, with the furling line taken aft to the cockpit.

This system has greatly enhanced the flexibility of the rig, and was extensively tested in a round Atlantic voyage in 2011. In winds above force 4, windward performance is improved by using the jib rather than the reefed genoa.

The Harken backstay tensioner ( manual type operated using a winch handle) was replaced in 2012.

The original Lewmar mainsheet system was replaced with a Harken recirculating ball type in 2007.

Two spinakker poles are supplied. One is the original Nautor pole. The other is a carbon pole with Harken fittings that is half the weight of the aluminium pole. This was reconditioned in 2010. The original reaching pole is supplied.

Hull and Deck Information

Hull and deck layout are as original design except for the following:

a) A section of stainless steel track has been fitted in the bow to provide an attachment for the furling jib stay. This is backed by a stainless plate under the deck, and is also tied to the stem fitting.

b) The forward Dorade ventilator box has been removed.

c) The forward sliding hatch has been replaced by a Lewmar opening hatch.

d) A Goiot manual anchor windlass has been fitted. A deck plate secures the Bruce main anchor

e) Cockpit lockers have been added.

The hull , deck, and cockpit GRP moulding were repainted using Awlgrip in 2013 with the boat under cover. All the fixed acrylic windows were replaced.

All the aluminium toerails were replaced in 2013, using original Nautor parts. These included all new fastenings with insulating washers to avoid corrosion. All the stanchion bases were replaced, with 4 new Nautor stanchions. ( The remainder were reconditioned)

Guard rail wires were  renewed  2016. The teak decks and the teak trim in the cockpit were all replaced by the previous owner in about 2006.

The steering pedestal was completely rebuilt and repainted (epoxy powder coating) in 2012, with all new bearings.
